Reciprocal links are not weighed as heavily in the search engine algorithms as one-way links; however, reciprocal links still have a place in any link-building campaign. Even though link exchanges do not have as much value as other types of links, there are ways to make reciprocal links work for you. Below you’ll find tips for getting the most out of your link exchanges.
1. Evaluate relevancy first. If another website is not in anyway relevant to your site, you shouldn’t be engaging in a link exchange. Consider whether your website visitors would benefit from the information on the other page, if not, you shouldn’t link to the site.
2. Consider the page rank of the other site. If the other site’s page rank is below yours, a link exchange may not do anything to improve your site’s ranking in the search engine. Aim to exchange links only with sites that have an equal or greater page rank as your site.
3. Look at the types of links present on the other page. If the other site is linking to anyone who asks, that might not be the best site to engage in a link exchange with. Sites that link to disreputable spam sites, or even sites that are unrelated to their niche can actually harm your ranking if you engage in a link exchange. Evaluate not only the site, but the links present on that site for best results.
4. Look at the specific page where your link will be placed on the site. Are there tons of links on the page or only a few? Will your link be listed near the top or bottom of the list? As a general rule, the fewer links and the higher you are on a page, the better. If the link will be at the bottom of a list of 50 other sites, the link exchange is unlikely to benefit your site.Â
